THE POULE AU POT D’HENRI IV AND PAYS D’ARNAY CULINARY BROTHERHOOD
A fraternal and joyful association, it holds at least one gathering a year in the autumn during which people who can help promote Arnay-le-Duc are inducted.
After successfully completing the culinary challenges established by the Brotherhood’s Grand Council and being named a Grand Master along with a medal and a diploma, they receive the title of “Compagnon de la Poule au Pot” (Boiled Chicken Journeyman).
A little bit of history…
2010 : 400th anniversary of the death of Henri IVArnay-le-Duc : the site of the 1st battle on the young Prince of Navarre (future Henri IV) at the chapel of Contaut in June 1570 during the Battle of ArnayDuring the French Wars of Religion, the Protestant troops under the Admiral of Coligny, including the young Prince of Navarre, future Henri IV, fought the Catholic army under the Marshal of Cossé-Brissac on 27 June 1570. To commemorate this historic local event, Arnay-le-Duc celebrated the life of Henri IV four centuries later with a major popular festival organised under the aegis of the Trade Union and the Festival Committee, gathering below an effigy of the king proclaiming:

To expand on this success, the parties responsible created the Poule au Pot d’Henri IV and Pays d’Arnay Brotherhood in 1992 to promote the local culinary products, tourism services as well as the services offered by local businesses, artisans, hotels and restaurants.
At the same time, the Brotherhood aims to foster national and international exchange between its members and all groups or organisations with similar objectives. It participated that year in the first European conference of culinary, wine and trade brotherhoods in Dijon and joined the association Amicale des Confréries Gastronomiques de Bourgogne (a Burgundy culinary brotherhood association).
The dignitaries are comprised of a member holding the title Grand Sérénissime along with a Council of Officers with the titles:

Their ceremonial dress
A large deep blue robe with an ermine border and yellow spotted openwork; a white lace surplice covers the shoulders while a large blue velvet hat with a white plume completes the ensemble.
After all inductions, the Grand Council concludes their ceremonies with a reading of the Poule au Pot poem:
“Aux jours de dîme et de taille
Arnay fut une bataille
Dont le pays maltraité
Garde la plaie au côté.
Combat d’estoc et de taille,
De cette cruelle bataille,
O, contraste, il n’est resté
Que poule au pot réputée.
Le temps a pour nos détresses,
D’irrésistibles caresses
Dont chaque âge est adouci.
Légumes et poules taillés en pièces
Disent seuls, en ces temps-ci
Le grand combat du roi Henry”
The next GRAND AUTUMN GATHERING will take place on Sunday, 8 November 2015. This gathering is open to the general public.
